  • Students explore the classroom or schoolyard to find different shapes. Students must then sketch the shape, tally whether the object is natural or man made, and graph their results. Wrap up: Review graphs. Discuss the objects found, and how man made shapes often come from shapes found in nature.

  • An experiment that has students stretch hosiery over the rim of a baby food jar and after adding soil and grass seeds. Students create Soil Sammy – the grass becomes hair. Older students can experiment with fertilizer, soil types and water balance.

  • Discuss soil contents (nutrients, minerals, bits of leaves, decaying material), origins (erosion, break down of decay, animal waste), importance (feed/anchor plants), types and characteristics. Students examine and describe each type of soil. Outside students find and describe different types of soil. Wrap-up: review soil characteristics and uses.
