  • Discuss sun movement (daily, seasonal), day length, temperature, sun placement/tilt, and shadow length. Predict warmest spot in the natural area and discuss importance for animals. In pairs, students place a thermometer in hypothesized warm spot, and have 2 chances to find the “hot spot”. Wrap-up: share warmest area and importance, discuss changes in body shadow and reveal eraser shadow technique: need to have body in line with the sun and the eraser. Sun needs to be at their back.

  • Agricultural production will need to increase by 70 percent in order to meet the new demands of food, feed, fuel and fibre for the predicted world population of nine billion by 2050. Agriculture plays a key role in helping to stimulate growth, secure rural livelihoods and reduce poverty in a way that is environmentally sustainable.

The Story of Agriculture and the Green Economy highlights how agriculture can help build a global green economy, including increased food production, more efficient water use, improved livelihoods and increased resources to benefit women smallholder farmers.

“The Farming First video uses the creative technique of animation to highlight how agriculture can help address the many challenges the world faces today,” says Morgane Danielou, from the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA). “These include investing in training, knowledge sharing and research and development to help farmers sustainably improve the quantity and quality of the crops they grow.”

“Public sector investment in agriculture has been in decline for 30 years, yet it is a crucial element in addressing food security and coping with resource shortages,” adds Howard Minigh, CEO and President of CropLife International. “More transparent and coordinated policies can help deliver the continued improvements needed to support the agricultural sector.”

This web link is a newly launched section of Farming First’s website focusing on the green economy. It includes a six-part online infographic, a guide to green economy initiatives on agriculture and Farming First’s policy paper on agriculture and the green economy.

Feel free to take a moment to browse through this easy-to-understand, very interesting and eye-opening website. Knowing the importance of our industry and what we do will make you feel good about coming to work.
