  • An experiment that has students stretch hosiery over the rim of a baby food jar and after adding soil and grass seeds. Students create Soil Sammy – the grass becomes hair. Older students can experiment with fertilizer, soil types and water balance.

  • Discuss soil contents (nutrients, minerals, bits of leaves, decaying material), origins (erosion, break down of decay, animal waste), importance (feed/anchor plants), types and characteristics. Students examine and describe each type of soil. Outside students find and describe different types of soil. Wrap-up: review soil characteristics and uses.
