Students learn about fractions, decimals, and pie charts by observing deciduous and coniferous trees in the schoolyard. Students are asked to fill in a pie chart based on their tallied findings, and then convert their answers into both a decimal and a fraction. Students learn to calculate percentage by finding plants, animals and non-living objects around the school yard and illustrating them in a pie chart. Wrap up: What had the highest percentage: plants, animals, or non-living? Was one dominant for most/all of the students?
